My wife's call the our cable provider to cancel our TV service was met with a rather steep discount, cutting our bill approximately in half at the expense of a sports package I no longer need (goodbye NFL Network) and a DVR that we never use. We may still ditch the rest of it at some point, but for now I'll still be able to watch racing and my Red Sox.

I'm surprised you didn't use your DVR. Now that I've had mine for a few years I can't imagine watching live tv. I record all the Blazers games and just fast forward through the commercials and halftime. I imagine it'd cut the time of a Red Sox game massively considering how much time nothing is really happening in a baseball game. My girlfriend occasionally asks if we really need cable, and I say I'd love to get rid of it but I can't go back to live tv. It's kind of like listening to NPR for awhile and then trying to switch back to commercial radio.....What are all these advertisements?!?

I haven't had cable since a move in 2011. I am thinking of mlb.TV that we can watch on ps3 as well as amazon prime the wife watches a lot with the kids.

So use your best judgement.

I called and cut ours back to the basic 20 about a year ago. Our provider didn't care at all. Which really surprised me.

Oh well, too bad for them. Hulu Plus is the $hit!

I don't have an explanation other than I've never had the time to watch something on tape that I didn't have time to watch live. The biggest thing will be not being able to pause or rewind live TV, but I think I can live with that.

Man, I couldn't live without my DVR. I watch mostly sports, and my favorite capability was recording an event and starting to watch it before it had finished recording. Gone are the days of coming home half way through a game and having to wait for the VHS to finish recording. DVR changed my life.

The only things I watch, Top Gear, Doctor Who, and F1. F1 I stream, the other two have so few episodes in a year that I don't feel bad about buying them through Amazon or the likes. I would gladly pay to stream F1 if they gave us the option.

I used to have Directv and when I tried to cancel the first time they said they would give me 4 free months. I said okay, and 4 months later I cancelled. So between Netflix and the others I have plenty to watch.

The content is fine, but how it is delivered is the big change. We're used to sometimes just having the TV on in the background while we do other things; like the way some people play music in their home for ambiance. You can't do that because the programming through providers like Hulu Plus or Crackle or Netflix is on demand.

I used to do that as well, but now it's more the radio option. I will sometimes put on a series using Netflix, as it will just keep playing them. It will only do I think 3 episodes that way before it asks if you are actually watching.
